Day 10: Time to stretch myself......ahh

Hurm... for anybodies who accidentally happen to read my blog... actually im in the middle of  the internship training program at Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB) KLCC...

Difference between me and other intern students which is actually at the plant side is the  real hands-on applications. Hopefully i could involve in one of the site project which could give me an exposure and observation on  how the gas processing is actually being done. ( visiting is just good enough for me)..

According to Mr. Adli... maybe i could but the only obstacles that lies is the matter of  time... whether i got enough time to be absorbed in the team or not... its due to my short internship program which is only last for 3 months... sometimes i envied the UTP's students who actually got the opportunities to be here for 8 months doing their internship... I guess UNITEN also need to change their scheme in order to make us as their student be more competent when we joined the real working environment. In 3 months, i need to stretch myself out to completely understands this industries....

Gas Processing in Paka and Kerteh runs 24 hours, 7 days per week to provide uninterrupted supply to customers

Actually, this is one of my dreams... working in the Oil & Gas sectors... money is not the matter... since in primary school, i already set up my mind to be an engineer in this field... So,as you can see... its actually my passions and integrations down deep in my heart... Being accepted to do my internship here is like an entrance for me.... i hope its not to late for someone at my age now... Hopefully, my dreams could be realize after this... be a real ENGINEER in O&G sectors...... Praised you all the engineers in this sectors... YOU ARE MY ROLE MODEL!!! and I am going to be at your seats later and I WOULD be HIGHER THAN YOU ALL.....

Here at KLCC office, the department is actually handling project designs of the PGB itself.. rather than playing withs "spanars" and mallet.. here dealt with paper & pencils.... they designed the discrete version of the project such as improvising and rejuvenation of the plants on paper, then several process of discussion and presentations, once approved... only proceed with the constructions. So, the engineers here are normally engineers that already served PETONAS for quite some times and mastered their individuals skills truly by heart. Basically, they are from the plant itself............

Day 9: Generator

As per yesterday, continue with the handout review...

Preventive and Predictive maintenance is key to ensure reliability and integrity of plant equipment

Generator

Generator set could operates in 3 types of common coordinated places which are :-

  • Island Mode
  • Parallel Between Gen sets units
  • Parallel between public utility
2 types synchronous generators
  1. Large sync (>1250 kVA)- normally used for base load generation
  2. Small sync (<1250 kVA) - normally for interruptible, maintained electrical supplies (back-up generator)

Day 8: Electricity Supply for Vital Services

For today... i go through the safety hand book and handouts given by my supervisor..

ELECTRICAL SUPPLY FOR VITAL SERVICES -SECURITY

The supplies is needed to maintain the operation to energise loads forming part of vital service. Other than that, this supplies must be uninterruptible (means not able to be interrupted by others e.g failure @ dis functioning) device... Normally it is UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Definition : What is UPS ??
A power supply that maintains power in the event of power failure.

Main functions :-

  • Serve as a secure current power source to vital instrumentation
  • Supply uninterrupted power to vital & essential loads for a specific period of time
This UPS could be divided into 2 parts :-

  1. D.C
  2. A.C
As per normal...D.C is a supply from battery. derived from battery-rectifier units (D.C UPS units) or from rectifier unit energised from one or more A.C uninterruptible...
Usually, this practice is used in small application.... small loads & closely integrated

A..C interruptible , maintained electricity supply.

This application actually used generators as a back up to produced electricity in power failure situation. As we known, big companies and organisation really particular involving the failure of their productions. For PETRONAS, in the duration of 5 minute power failure, they could loss almost billions of  Dollars. So it shows that, maintaining the current supply for the production to take place is  a very wise way to maintained their productions.

The backup generator that being used is either Diesel-based or Gas-based generator. The design operation is simple. The generator will automatically starts on the detection of mains power failures. Usually, this type of generator needs 10s -15s from idle to generates the currents.

The above diagrams actually shows the general flows of UPS. Main power is supplied through the UPS Block which consist of a switch and Battery. The switch could only acts as an ON/OFF switch. During the normal operation, the power directly empowered the loads through the switch. Once power failure occurs, the switch will trip or change the tipping from utility power to Battery. Thus, the fully charged battery will supply currents and backup the current failures. In the end, the load is still running with the help of the battery and on the other sides, production is still ON..

But this application also have many criteria to be taken into accounts. This will be later explained...(After i finished reviewing the UPS)..hahahahhahahahah

Day 7: Handout Review.. Switchgear & MCC

In this assignment... i just need to review a thick handout on Switchgear and MCCs.....
besides that... it just a ruler or prescription to be followed by the design engineers to design or to install instrumentation inside the GAS plant....

With their MOTTO... "MINIMAL SUPERVISIONS AND MATURITY"..... I NEED TO LEARN everything by myself..... but actually.. it is a positive working environment which actually polishing our ability and maturity in settling problem in our ways... Instead of giving me spoon, they give me pan to prepare my own foods.. in this way.. my appetite could be larger and i could digest it well...

so, it means that , this scheme actually makes us learn something by our truly heart since we are the one who responsible on the outcome in the end.
Switch gears and Motors........

............dadadadadadad........ i think i need to find something which can improved my understanding in this part.. maybe it is because, the handouts is only a general info of the instrument or im too slow to digest this thing....

So.. what i do.. try to find materials which could enhance my understanding...
BUT... unfortunately.. there nothing unless i surf the Internet... and again... how... no computers provided for me...  brought my laptop, but no broadband... (actually being suspended due to the 3 months outstanding) ARRGHH,.....!!

Day 6: 1st Assignment

1st precious Tasks

My 1st assignment was to develop my personal individual aspiration for the 3 months of industrial training in TFDD. This assignment have to be presented later...

HUrm... thinking bout aspiration, i would like to learn more about the "How Engineers Work?"..
At College, i only theoretically learn the concept and how to think like an engineers maybe...yeah, thats what we call engineer-to-be learning process... but i doubt... what actually they do?? Especially in Petronas.. Its a well known company which involve in Oil&Gas Business.. But what is the job scope of an Electrical & Electronics graduated engineers  inside this company.....????

So, my objective is to learn as much as i can during my internship here...  At lot of questions floating in minds as the event of  "Hot Ballons Fairs at Putrajaya".....  Darn...!! i dont have opportunity to ride those yet.... expensive dude!!

Actually, PGB is more likely a company which handles the maintenance of the plants(Gas Plant) in Malaysia. Through my observations and understandings, it is actually acting as the spine of the PETRONAS... but not in terms of making moneys... PGB is more likely doing internal project for Petronas itself.. So, the money is actually still inside the vaults.. maybe it is one way of maintaining the productivity by handling the problems themselves...(rejuvenation and revamption, improvisation ad etc)...
